Fangcun: shape your life, seek your own good fortune.

“I shape my own life; I seek my own good fortune.” This idea from Liao-Fan's Four Lessons is at the heart of Fangcun. A card brings a question into view. What comes next is shaped by your choices and actions.

Fangcun: a small space within

The first lesson quotes a saying that the field of good fortune lies within the heart. Fangcun, literally a small square, points to that inner space. When something troubles you, pause and notice what matters, what you fear, and which habits keep repeating.

The cards borrow this invitation to reflect. Bring a question, or draw your daily card and take a moment to see what has been on your mind.

See what you can change, then act

Liao-Fan's Four Lessons explores shaping one's life, correcting faults, doing good, and humility. NextMove takes seriously its call to act: notice an old habit, try a different response, and return to reflect when things change.

Applying for a role, speaking to someone, caring for your wellbeing, or getting along with family all take place in daily life. The conversation can continue after the cards.

64 hexagrams give the cards their structure

Fangcun uses the I Ching's 64 hexagrams as its card structure. Each card corresponds to a hexagram describing a situation or change. Liao-Fan's Four Lessons informs the attitude of reflection and agency brought to that situation. These are distinct sources.

Read each card alongside its position and your question. Bring what fits—and what still needs explaining—into your conversation with NextMove.

From a card to a conversation

Draw one daily card, seek a single insight, explore the present and what follows, or compare two or three options. Shuffle and cut the deck, choose your cards, and reveal them in order.

After the basic meanings, add a little background or continue with your original question. When something changes, return through your journal to the same conversation.

Bring your experience into the conversation

Cards can open a conversation. Calibration helps NextMove understand the life you have already lived. Within work, relationships, wellbeing, and family, add real events by year and consider important changes alongside your own observations.

Profile, calibration, and memory each have a role. Add information gradually and correct what is inaccurate. This information gives relevant conversations context grounded in your experience.
